Japanese technology to raise SEHAI curriculum
Filed under NewsJul 31JEDDAH – The Japanese government agreed to enhance its cooperation on technical curriculum through Japan Cooperation Center for the Middle East (JCCME) in the second academic year of SEHAI, providing a series of Japan-made tools and equipment which consist of 64 different items.
The move on SEHAI is a manifestation of further cooperation as JCCME and Nippon Engineering College (NEEC) already prepared curriculum and textbooks and at the same time dispatched three Japanese specialists under the support of Japanese government.

JEDDAH – Saudi Arabia would be the most attractive prospect for international insurance companies that are looking to operate in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, the “Saudi Arabia Insurance Report Q3 2010″ released by Companiesandmarkets.com on Thursday said.
Virtually all other trends are favurable and the market has been opened up to foreign competition. New laws are promoting the development of health insurance, it said. Saudi Arabias economy has withstood the downturn in energy prices through 2009 well, it added.

GE Aviation JV firms bag 10b Mideast deals
Filed under NewsJul 30JEDDAH – GE Aviation along with its joint venture companies, CFM International and the Engine Alliance, have amassed engine and services orders valued at more than $16 billion at the recent 2010 Farnborough Air Show, of which more than half – nearly $10 billion – were signed by leading airlines in the Middle East region, notably, the UAE.
Of the nearly $10 billion in deals, Emirates, the Dubai-based international airline, accounted for $7.8 billion.

AL-KHOBAR – Saudi Aramco has signed contracts with international firms to build a multi-billion dollar refinery at Yanbu on Red Sea coast, the state-run company said on Wednesday.
The 400,000 barrels per day (bpd) refinery accounts for just under a quarter of Saudis plans to add 1.7 million barrels per day of refining capacity.
It was to have been built by US oil firm ConocoPhillips and Aramco in Yanbu Industrial City, but Conoco pulled out of the plans in April.

JEDDAH – The value of luxury Swiss watches exported to Saudi Arabia and the UAE jumped by a quarter in the first half of 2010, according to the latest figures from the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FSWI).
In the UAE, the market for Swiss watches increased 24 percent from CHF224.5 million ($211.90 million) to CHF278.4 million ($262.78 million) in the first six months of this year, while Saudi Arabia recorded a rise of 25 percent to CHF106.6 million ($100.60 million) in the same period.

Online shopping catching on with Saudis
Filed under NewsJul 29JEDDAH: Saudi consumers fed up with the low quality of products and seasonal price increases on items that are traditionally purchased before and during Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr are opting to buy earlier and online.
“I have already ordered some appliances needed for Ramadan cooking and clothing for my children as well as some Eid gifts from online shopping sites based in the US and Europe,” said Renad Bassam, a 28-year-old mother of two.

Abdullah to lead three-way Beirut summit
Filed under NewsJul 29DAMASCUS: Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah will lead a rare tripartite summit in Beirut on Friday to bring together President Bashar Assad of Syria and President Michel Suleiman of Lebanon in an effort to improve inter-Arab relations.
The reconciliation summit is widely seen as the successful outcome of King Abdullahs diplomatic overtures to strengthen Arab unity and confront the challenges facing the Arab Ummah.

RIYADH – Saudi Arabias efforts to diversify its economy are paying off as the countrys franchising industry, estimated to be worth SR3.75 billion, is expected to grow at an annual rate of 12 percent.
The robust growth forecast underlines the increasing economic contributions of the franchising industry in Saudi Arabia and its strong potential to become the most popular non-oil business sector in the region, said Diya Abdo, Project Manager, Saudi International Franchise Exhibition and Conference (IFEC 2010), Riyadh Exhibition Company (REC).

RIYADH: UNICEF is inviting nominations for its regional media awards honoring those journalists in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region who have contributed to raising awareness of childrens rights.
“The regional media award is an annual prize that UNICEF launched to motivate those working in broadcast and print media to highlight the reality of childrens rights and convey their challenges and suffering to the public,” the organizations communications chief for the MENA region Abdel-Rahman Ghandour told Arab News.

Banks boost TASI but SABIC Kayan fall
