CEM calls for rapid deployment of electric cars in clean energy drive

JEDDAH – The 25 countries that participated in the first-ever Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) have endorsed the “rapid deployment of electric vehicles” as part of the global pursuit to advance clean energy technology and policies.

At the conclusion of the two-day conference in Washington DC on Tuesday, the participants came up with more than a half-dozen new initiatives to accelerate the development of clean energy technologies around the world. The programs include avoidance of the need to build more than 500 mid-sized power plants in the next 20 years, support the growing global market for renewable energy and carbon capture technologies, bring solar lanterns or other improved lighting services to more than 10 million poor people by 2015, and help encourage young women to pursue careers in clean energy.

Abu Dhabi to build worlds largest solar plant

ABU DHABI – French oil firm Total and Spains Abengoa Solar will partner with Abu Dhabis alternative energy company Masdar to build “the worlds largest” concentrated solar power plant, Masdar announced on Wednesday.

The state-owned firm said it has selected a “consortium of Total and Abengoa Solar as a partner to own, build and operate Shams 1, the worlds largest concentrated solar power plant and the first of its kind in the Middle East.”

Copenhagen conference failed

ABU DHABI: In a passionate speech that defined the mood of the keynote addresses and the entire World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi on Monday, Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed said: We do not have the luxury of time to meet year after year in endless negotiations. And the science of climate change means that we cannot accept a watered down minimalist treaty. We cannot negotiate with the laws of physics. You cannot cut a deal with Mother Nature.

The Copenhagen climate conference, he said, had secured some positive outcomes but the Copenhagen accord in its present form would not prevent catastrophic climate change. Changes had to be radical and immediate. If we dont act now, our rainforests will die, deserts become unbearable to live in and low level countries like the Maldives will slip beneath the rising sea.

Masdar Schneider in strategic partnership

ABU DHABI – Masdar, Abu Dhabis multi-faceted renewable energy company and a wholly owned subsidiary of the Mubadala Development Company (Mubadala), and Schneider Electric, the global specialist in energy management, today announced the signing of a strategic partnership agreement covering broad partnership initiatives between the two entities. Schneider Electric will provide energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions for Masdar City – the 6-sq-km clean-technology cluster in Abu Dhabi.

The mutual agreement outlines the delivery of a “living laboratory” Innovation Center at Masdar City that will incorporate both a Research and Development Facility and a Technical Center of Excellence. The R&D facility will focus on long-term sustainable technology research in Green Buildings (energy efficiency initiatives), Smart Grids (city-wide management system), Water (district cooling, treatment plants) and ICT (data centers, smart buildings). The center of excellence will be a laboratory addressing current design practices utilized in Masdar City with the view to ensuring optimum efficiency and integration.

UAE Sweden discuss bilateral trade

STOCKHOLM: UAE Minister of Foreign Trade Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al-Qasimi discussed the enhancement of bilateral relations with Swedish Minister for Trade Ewa Bjorling during her recent visit to Sweden.

Both parties conferred on the latest developments regarding negotiations over the proposed Gulf-European free trade agreement as well as the effects of the current global financial crisis on global trade. The UAE delegation included UAE Ambassador to Sweden Sheikha Najla Mohammed Al-Qasimi and Salah Salem bin Omeir Al-Shamsi, chairman of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FCCI) and chairman of the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Sheikha Lubna explained that the visit was an excellent opportunity to discuss various issues and topics of mutual interest and examine ways to develop cooperation in investment projects so that the UAE and Sweden could benefit from their existing infrastructures. She also encouraged the private sectors and businessmen in both countries to leverage investment opportunities in their respective countries.
