Court rejects case after 10 years of litigation
Filed under NewsJul 24JEDDAH: A Saudi contractor intends to complain to the minister of justice and the president of the Court of Appeals after the courts bench responsible for resolving trade disputes decided not to continue considering his case against a contracting company after 10 years of litigation.
The contractor filed the lawsuit accusing the contracting company of refusing to pay him SR2 million for a project he had carried out on its behalf. The court told the plaintiff that the case has been rejected after considering it for more than 10 years.

Businessman barred from travel over land rent
Filed under NewsApr 29JEDDAH – The Administrative Court in Jeddah has placed a travel ban on a Saudi businessman and frozen his assets to force him to pay overdue rent to the Mayors Office.
The court heard on Tuesday how the businessman had rented from the mayoralty a site containing a lake in the north of the Corniche over a period of 15 years for SR750,000 per year before the contract was terminated by the Attorney General and the site was rented out to another businessman. “The businessman took the Mayors Office to court to demand that it retract its decision and exempt him from fines placed on him after the contract was annulled,” an informed source said, without specifying a figure for the penalties.
He added that the businessman is also seeking compensation of SR3 million for buildings he constructed at the site.

12-year-old bride drops petition for divorce
Filed under NewsFeb 2RIYADH: A 12-year-old girl who was married off to an 80-year-old man in Buraidah has dropped her request for a divorce just one day before a court hearing to annul the marriage.
A source at the Human Rights Commission (HRC) said the girl, her mother and legal representative came to court and withdrew the request.
The girl failed to appear in court on Monday when the hearing was originally supposed to be heard. Her legal representative did not provide a valid reason for her absence.

HRC saves Buraidahs child bride
Filed under NewsJan 19RIYADH: An 80-year-old man has been convinced to annul his marriage to a 12-year-old girl, the Human Rights Commission (HRC) has said.
The HRC had established a committee to investigate the marriage after complaints from the girls mother, who is divorced. The husbands agreement to the divorce is the latest twist in the saga since he married the child in Buraidah recently.
The committee said on Monday that meetings had been held over the last two days with the husband, the girls father and her legal representative to finalize a divorce.

Child marriages still continue
Filed under NewsJan 18JEDDAH: Despite the Human Rights Commission (HRC) trying for some time to put an end to child marriages in the Kingdom, an 80-year-old man in Buraidah recently married a 12-year-old girl after giving her father a dowry of SR85,000.
The girls mother, who is divorced from the father, has filed a complaint with the HRC and the authorities to end the marriage.

Decision on payment to workers soon
Filed under NewsOct 27JEDDAH: A final decision is expected early next month on a payment row involving workers at the General Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques, a legal representative of the employees said on Sunday.
The presidency has refused to transfer salaries into the bank accounts of 500 employees, claiming it was sinful and went against Islamic teachings.
The Administrative Court in Jeddah had earlier issued a judgment in favor of the employees. All documents in support of the employees case have been submitted to the judge examining the case at the Court of Grievances in Jeddah, the representative said.

Appeals court yet to issue verdict in Sawa scam
Filed under NewsOct 23JEDDAH: A final decision has not yet been made in the case of the mastermind of the Sawa scam, Abdul Aziz Al-Jihani, according to his legal representative.
I learned from the Jeddah Summary Court on Wednesday that the Appeals Court did not make its final decision on the appeal against the summary courts 20-year sentence, Hisham Hanbouli told Arab News, denying reports that the appeal had been rejected by the higher court.
More than 40,000 investors were cheated out of more than SR1 billion relating to Sawa telephone cards about three years ago. Thirty-three other accomplices were handed punishments between three months and five years.

Lawyer denies hand in fraud case
Filed under NewsOct 8JEDDAH: A Saudi lawyer from Madinah who was reported by the local press to be associated with a woman accused of fraudulently obtaining SR10 million has denied any involvement in her case.
The lawyer, Saud Al-Hujaili, said reports that he was involved in the fraud of Umm Faris (dubbed the Madinah Embezzler or Hamoor in Arabic by the Saudi press) were inaccurate. Al-Hujaili said he has been representing Umm Faris in a private real estate case that is not connected to the SR10 million-fraud case.
Thirty cases of fraud have been filed against Umm Faris in Madinahs General Court and 12 in the Ministry of Commerce and Industrys Madinah branch. A private source close to the case said Umm Faris was a victim of foul play, that she is not educated enough to steal SR10 million and that there are hidden details relating to the case that have not yet been revealed.

Court rejects sex-braggarts request
Filed under NewsOct 6JEDDAH: The Jeddah Summary Court has denied a request to release a Saudi man who bragged in detail about his sexual adventures on an LBC weekly program so that he can be present during an examination of the case by the Ministry of Culture and Information.
The lawyer has also asked the court to stop the hearings until the ministry issues its decision.

Properties in Madina await land price decision
