German US Saudi experts investigate plane crash

RIYADH – A team of specialists has started probing Tuesdays crash of a German cargo plane on a runway at King Khaled International Airport in Riyadh, in accordance with the directives of Crown Prince Sultan, Deputy Prime Minister, Defense and Aviation Minister and Inspector General.

The team, headed by Deputy Executive President of the General Authority of Civil Aviation Abdul Aziz Al-Anqari, has inspected the incidents site, met with investigators and briefed Al-Anqari about technical work plans and progress in the investigation, said GACA spokesman Khaled Bin Abdullah Al-Khabiri.

Technical fault delays Saudia Chennai-Riyadh flight

JEDDAH – Due to a small technical fault, a Saudi Arabian Airlines flight from the Indian city of Chennai to Riyadh was slightly delayed, Waleed Al-Aloomy, Assistant Director General of Public Relations in the airlines, said Monday.

The 777 Boeing aircraft arrived at King Khaled International Airport in Riyadh safely, he added.

Cargo plane crashes in Riyadh

RIYADH: A Lufthansa cargo plane crashed at King Khaled International Airport (KKIA) in Riyadh on Tuesday.

There were no casualties, although its two pilots sustained minor injuries, according to the German airline and the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA).

The aircraft split into two pieces when it landed at 11.38 in the morning.

Investigation begins into death of stowaway

BEIRUT/RIYADH – At a time when Lebanese security authorities in Beirut have started investigating workers who serviced a Nas Air plane that carried a stowaway whose body was found in Riydah Saturday, medical authorities in Riyadh are waiting for directives to form committees to examine the body and conduct an autopsy.

The body was discovered when a maintenance worker inspected the Airbus 320s landing gear after it landed at Riyadhs King Khaled International Airport on the flight from Lebanon, the Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation said Saturday in a statement.

Two Saudi airports install eGate

JEDDAH – Saudi Arabia has introduced an eGate system at two of its airports to improve passenger throughput.

The systems – at King Khaled International Airport in Riyadh and King Fahd International Airport in Dammam – use passengers biometric images. Using the new eGate system, immigration officials will ask passengers to punch their cards at the eGate and place their index fingers in an allocated space on the gate to get a biometric print.

The countrys Passport Department has indicated that the eGate facility could be extended to other airports in the Kingdom soon.

Passengers must be cautious when passing through security at airports

RIYADH – A 29-year-old electronics engineer, who holds an Australian passport, was upset after his hand baggage with a laptop and a wallet containing his Iqama (residence permit), Saudi drivings license, Istimara (car registration paper) and SR1,000 in cash were lost at the security check at the domestic terminal of King Khaled International Airport (KKIA) here last week.

The victim spoke to Saudi Gazette on condition of anonymity as legal proceedings are under way with airport authorities.

Blind Indian goes home

RIYADH – Abubacker Madathil (45), who went blind due to a medical condition called diabetic retinopathy, left Saudi Arabia at the weekend. The Indian worker who arrived in Saudi Arabia on a house-drivers visa, was desperate to go home, particularly after losing his eyesight.

Stranded Indian engineers heave a huge sigh of relief

RIYADH – A group of 22 Indian engineers, who have been struggling to return home for over 15 months, heaved a huge sigh of relief Thursday after their case was resolved following the intervention of the Riyadh Governorate.

The first batch of nine engineers left for India on Thursday from King Khaled International Airport in Riyadh. Others will follow suit within the next week, as soon as their papers are processed after the Riyadh Governorate ordered their company to facilitate their departure.

Krishna, External Affairs Minister; Anand Sharma, Commerce and Industry Minister; Murli Deora, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas; Shiv Shankar Menon, National Security Adviser; T.K.A. King Abdullah and Hamad discuss ways to bolster ties

RIYADH: Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah held talks here on Tuesday with Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani on major regional and international issues and ways of strengthening relations between the two GCC neighbors.

“The talks focused on new developments on Gulf, Arab, Islamic and international levels,” the Saudi Press Agency said, adding that Crown Prince Sultan, deputy premier and minister of defense and aviation, and Riyadh Gov. Prince Salman attended the talks.
