No women in JEF Delegates unhappy
Filed under NewsFeb 15JEDDAH: Despite women’s strong presence in the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI), the second day at the Jeddah Economic Forum (JEF) did not attract a large number of women. The forum is back this year with a more informative agenda, calling itself once again as an annual event that draws the world’s top economists and government leaders. However, women delegates are disappointed that only one of the 35 people scheduled to speak is a woman — the Swedish trade minister, Ewa Helena Bjrling.
Barbara Schumacher, a German journalist who came to JEF for the third time for media coverage, said she was disappointed by the lack of women’s participation and attendance. “I was really shocked when I read the program and found there was only one woman speaker. The program two years ago was more interesting because a number of Saudi women were among the speakers,” she said.

Saudi trade ties with foreign countries expand
Filed under NewsFeb 14During the last decade or so Saudi Arabia’s trade ties with foreign countries have gone through a marked change which is reflective of prevailing global realities. While countries such as the United States, Japan, Britain and France continue to maintain considerable political and economic clout, new power centers are equally important. Hence Saudi Arabia’s strengthening of trade relations with China, India, Brazil, South Korea, South Africa and other such emerging economies makes sense.
Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah’s visit to China and India in January 2006, just a few months after his ascending the throne, was seen as a strategic shift in the country’s foreign policy. Unfixed fares drive cab passengers crazy
Filed under NewsFeb 13JEDDAH: This Red Sea coastal city has about 280 taxi and livery companies and more than 30,000 taxis but does not have a fixed price for destinations, which is instead often contingent on the nationality of the customer.
“I have noticed that the Pakistani drivers usually ask for the highest price even for a short distance. They are not always willing to negotiate,” a passenger, who did not want his name published, told Arab News. “A Pakistani driver would never go down below the fixed price tag of SR10 even for a distance of 300 meters, he added.
