SEOUL – South Koreas Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction Co Ltd said on Wednesday it has won a $1.46 billion contract to build a new desalination plant in Saudi Arabia.
The plant will produce 1.025 million cubic meters of desalinated water per day and will be integrated with a 2,400 megawatts (MW) power plant, in Ras Azzour, on the Gulf coast.
The plant, expected to be the worlds largest would be completed in January 2014, Doosan said in a statement on the Korea Stock Exchange.

JEDDAH: The Council of Ministers on Monday night decided to change the power supply from 127/220V to 230/400V in two phases over 25 years. It also decided to increase the salaries of military officers.
The change in the voltage of power supply in new regions and for new subscribers would start with the implementation of the decision, Culture and Information Minister Abdul Aziz Khoja said.

Development of Taif Industrial City ready
Filed under NewsAug 31JEDDAH – The Saudi Industrial Property Authority (Modon) signed the first projects to implement the development of Taif Industrial City.
The first phase of three million square meters includes the development works and road construction that will be implemented within 18 months.
The first phase is expected to accommodate approximately 150 factories.

Jeddah mayor launches office on Al Ruwais Development Project land ownership claims
Filed under NewsAug 31Jeddah Mayor Hani Abu Ras unveiled the Owners Relations Office for Al-Ruwais Development Project that will attend to the needs and answer the questions of individuals who would come to present supporting documents over their ownership claims on properties covered by the project.
Opening the office on Sunday, he said the move is in line with the decision of the Minister of Municipal and Rural Affairs to proceed with the expropriation of real estate located in Al-Ruwais area that are included in the project as mandated by pertinent decree and subsequent resolutions to that effect.

Prince Salman leaves US after treatment
Filed under NewsAug 30RIYADH: Riyadh Gov. Prince Salman left the United States Monday morning after undergoing successful spinal surgery at a US hospital on Aug. 16, an official statement said.
“On the recommendation of the medical team treating him, Prince Salman will rest for a few days outside the Kingdom for recuperation,” said the statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency.
Prince Salman left the hospital last week and received telephone calls from a number of Arab leaders, including President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt and President Omar Bashir of Sudan.

Crown Prince Sultan on leave abroad
Filed under NewsAug 29RIYADH: Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdul-Aziz, who was for much of last year out of the country for medical treatment and rest, went abroad on Saturday for vacation, state news agency SPA said.
Sultan, who is also defense minister and deputy prime minister, left the Kingdom for a “private holiday” for an unspecified time, SPA said in a brief report, citing a royal court statement. It did not say where he was going.

Conditions worsening at Jazan deportation center
Filed under NewsAug 29JEDDAH: The Supervisor General of the National Society for Human Rights in Jazan, Ahmad Al-Bahkali, said the health conditions of many inmates in the main deportation center in Jazan was poor.
Five Ethiopian detainees died of suffocation in the center last week due to overcrowding. Hygienic conditions have deteriorated as well.
“The disease-breeding situation in the center persists,” Al-Bahkali told Arab News on Saturday by telephone. “The situation in the detention center should be reviewed. Basically the facility was meant for the detention of illegal foreigners for a limited number of days before their deportation to their native countries. But now many inmates who entered the country illegally have to stay in the center for longer periods because of various reasons.”

Salman receives call from Bashir
Filed under NewsAug 28RIYADH: Riyadh Gov. Prince Salman on Saturday received a telephone call from Sudanese President Omar Bashir, who inquired about his health.
Prince Salman had undergone a successful spinal operation in a hospital in the United States on Aug. 16. He left the hospital last week.
Prince Salman received similar calls from Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Chairman of Kuwaits National Assembly Jassem Al-Khorafi.
