EUs bruised economies search for way forward

Spain and other countries on Europes financially stricken fringe are groping for a new basis from economic growth to put people to work and pay down crushing deficits and debts. In Spains case, something to start generating jobs for 4 million unemployed people amid the rubble of an unsustainable construction and housing boom.
The question is especially urgent in countries with the eurozones messiest public finances: Spain, Portugal, Ireland, and Greece.

JEDDAH – More than 1 billion people, or about one in six worldwide do not have safe drinking water and more than 2 billion lack access to adequate sanitation, the United Nations Development Program said. If current water usage trends continue, by the year 2025 two-thirds of the worlds population wont have enough clean water.
As the World Water Day approaches (on Monday), now is the time for a global effort to support the widespread adoption of water reuse practices, which can be a key step toward quickly and effectively reversing the global threat of clean water scarcity.

France sets up cultural pavilion at Janadriya
Filed under NewsMar 19RIYADH – A chorus of Pays-Basques singers greeted King Abdullah when he visited the French pavilion on the opening night of the Janadriya festival Wednesday.
He was welcomed to the pavilion, decked out by mini-Eiffel Towers and French-style cafes, by French Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand.
In an address Mitterrand praised the Kings promotion of traditional Arab culture, adding: “France, also with age-old traditions… shares with your majesty this unique message.”

JEDDAH – Saudi Aramco and Petrochina are to be honored as refining & energy companies of the year at the 23rd annual presentation of Hart Energy Publishings Refining & Energy Company of the Year Awards that will take place Wednesday (March 24) at the Sheraton Phoenix Hotel in Phoenix, Arizona.
Accepting the award on behalf of Saudi Aramco will be Dawood M. Al-Dawood, vice president for Marketing, Supply, and Joint Venture Coordination, Saudi Aramco.

Gulf region forms Aluminum Council
Filed under NewsMar 19DUBAI – Two years ago, in 2008, the primary aluminum producers in the Gulf region announced the formation of an organization – known as the Gulf Aluminum Council (GAC) – that would represent, promote and protect the interests of the aluminum industry within the region. Since then, much work has been done to establish the various committees of the GAC and build the foundations for progress toward the associations goals. This development work has culminated in the establishment of official GAC headquarters in Dubai on Wednesday.
The Board of the GAC comprises the chief executive officers of the six founding member companies, five of which have established smelters in the region, namely: Aluminum Bahrain (Alba), Dubai Aluminium Company (DUBAL), Emirates Aluminium (EMAL), Qatar Aluminium (Qatalum), and Sohar Aluminium (Sohar), in Oman.

OPEC returns to oil sector investment

OPEC nations used the sidelines of this weeks meeting of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries to speak about their plans for significant investments in energy infrastructures.
And with oil demand set to rise over the long term, investment in the energy sector, from drilling projects to building new refineries is essential.

Sprawling science oasis coming up in Riyadh
Filed under NewsMar 18RIYADH – Prince Salman Bin Abdul Aziz, Emir of Riyadh Region, Tuesday night laid the foundation stone of the Prince Salman Science Oasis spread over an area of 200,000 sq. meters along King Abdullah Road in the capital.
Businessmen have put in SR400 million to create the oasis. The Supreme Commission for Riyadh Development Authority will design and build the park that would initially include administrative buildings and eight thematic show halls on earth, space, water, life, energy, technology, awareness, and three dimensional art.

NEW YORK/VIENNA – Oil prices settled near $83 a barrel Wednesday after crude inventories grew less than expected last week, and the stock market rose on the Feds promise to keep interest rates at record lows.
Benchmark crude for April delivery rose $1.23 cents to settle at $82.93 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan has signed a deal with Iran paving the way for the construction of a much-delayed pipeline pumping Iranian natural gas to the energy-starved South Asian country, officials said on Wednesday.
The $7.6 billion project is crucial for Pakistan to avert a growing energy crisis already causing severe electricity shortages in the country of about 170 million.

Nesma to provide 28 KAUST scholarships
Filed under NewsMar 16RABEGH – Nesma Pioneering Gift will provide 28 scholarships for Masters and Ph.D. students at King Abdullah University for Science and Technology (KAUST). It was announced here Monday.
Scholarships at KAUST enable promising graduate students to participate in the institutes mission to advance science and technology, and take on the present challenges in energy, water, food and the environment.
Saleh Al-Turki, Chairman of Nesma, has requested that preference for the scholarships be given to Saudi scholars, thus providing greater opportunities and advancement for Saudi nationals.
