WASHINGTON – If Barack Obama is to push through a long-stalled US-South Korea free trade deal, he is going to need something he hasnt seen much of during his presidency: Republican support.
Obamas Democratic allies in Congress are balking after his announcement last week at a high-profile global summit that he will revive the accord to cut tariffs and other barriers to trade.
Democratic worries about South Korean restrictions on auto and beef trade sank the agreement after Republican George W. Bushs administration and Seoul signed it three years ago.
MADINA – The Chairwoman of Jeddah Literary Clubs Womens Committee has said she is not happy with recently introduced regulations permitting female membership, and instead wants a quota system to “make up for years of marginalization”.
Fatima Elyas said that although the new rules, announced ten days ago by the Ministry of Culture and Information, allow women to be elected to the board of directors, the real challenge was to overcome a mentality that has seen “women left on the sidelines for years”.

JEDDAH – Princess Adela Bint Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz, chairwoman of the Sanad Childrens Cancer Charity, has appealed to officials and the health sector to set up a special center for post-treatment care for children.
Speaking at the launch of a conference on children in convalescence from cancer on Tuesday, the Princess said a dedicated post-treatment center would enable children to be given the attention required for physical and mental stress resulting from chemotherapy.
RIYADH – An imaginary child character named Swayyer is to be the mascot of this years Janadriya festival.
Swayyers picture will be on t-shirts and other memorabilia to be distributed at the festival.
The inventor of the character, Dr. Iqbal Al-Arfaj, the chairwoman of the Womens Culture and Heritage Committee, said Swayyer aims “to deepen the love of the festival in the hearts of children.” She said that she tested the character on the children of her relatives “who loved it.”
San Jose – Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pledged Thursday to back female entrepreneurs, promote small business and modernize customs procedures as part of US efforts to boost Latin American prosperity.
In a speech to regional foreign ministers in Costa Rica, Clinton said Washington will also help teach more people English and Spanish, cut environmental costs for business, and expand lending opportunities for all.
JEDDAH: A center for businesswomen and community service was opened at the Yanbu Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Thursday. A board of directors comprising 20 female volunteers was appointed to run it. Chairwoman Nawwal Hadi told Arab News this was the first time a specific center had been created for businesswomen in Yanbu.

Speaking at a workshop at the Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz City for Humanitarian Services in Riyadh on Sunday, Princess Sara said the charity worked toward laws related to civil status to protect divorcees and their families.
