Saudi pilot killed in training mission

RIYADH: A Saudi air force pilot was killed on Tuesday during a training flight at a Spanish airbase, Spains Defense Ministry said. The fatality was identified only as a lieutenant colonel. The cause of the crash was not immediately known.

A statement released by ministry said the Eurofighter jet crashed “shortly after taking off Tuesday from MorĂ³n de la Frontera airbase in the southern Andalusia region.”

Boeing Airbus seal 135 billion deals

FARNBOROUGH, England – Arch rivals Boeing Co. and Airbus announced new orders worth almost $13 billion at the start of the Farnborough International Airshow on Monday, raising hopes that the aviation industry is on the way back up after a dire two-year slump.

The aerospace market “has come back faster than we expected” and Boeing has twice raised its internal forecasts for the number of orders at the biennial show, said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President Jim Abaugh.

Saabs road comes to an end after 60 years

STOCKHOLM – General Motors announcement on Friday that it will wind down its loss-making brand Saab Automobile brings an end to the iconic Swedish brand after six decades of car manufacturing.

GM said in a statement Friday it had failed to reach an agreement with Dutch sports car maker Spyker on a sale of the division, just three weeks after another luxury car maker, Koenigsegg of Sweden, withdrew its bid for Saab. The Detroit auto giant acquired Saab 20 years ago, but the takeover was never much of a success for either party.

In 2008, Saab, which currently employs 3,400 people in Sweden, posted a net loss of 3.0 billion kronor (241 million euros, $341 million at the time).

Emirates makes impressive departure during airshow

DUBAI – A logistical accomplishment, Emirates successfully coordinated the departure of 16 aircraft within 16 minutes each day of the 2009 Dubai Airshow this week.

Working within a 30 minute window, due to the 2009 Dubai Airshow daily flight display, Emirates worked quickly and efficiently to ensure the on-time departure of its many passengers.

The culmination of months of planning, involving numerous departments within Emirates, ensured all flights departed safely and without delay.

Dubai Airshow ends on low sales note

DUBAI – The biennial Dubai Airshow ended on Thursday, fulfilling pessimistic analyst forecasts, as sales of only a bit more than $14 billion dimmed against $155.5 billion in 2007.

“The declared on-site order book for Dubai Airshow 2009 is now over $14 billion (9.3 billion euros),” the organisers website said, with final figures expected to be released in the coming days.

European aircraft manufacturer Airbus walked away with the highest share, with orders and letters of intent to buy planes worth $5.3 billion.
