JEDDAH – The Pakistan National Circle in Jeddah is organizing relief work for the victims of the Swat region which includes hundreds of thousands of people who have been displaced due to increased violence in northeastern Pakistan.

“Its our duty to rise to the occasion whenever such a humanitarian crisis takes place,” said Mian Mateen Aslam, the chairman of the PNC.

In the past too the PNC has been involved in organizing relief efforts for the victims of natural disasters.

“This time it is more important as our people including women and children have been caught in the midst of a man-made catastrophe caused by terrorist activities. It is a humanitarian crisis,” said Mian Mateen.

The PNC efforts are in response to an earlier call by the Pakistan Consul General, Zaigham Uddin Azam, to “contribute to the Prime Ministers Special Fund for the victims of terrorism for providing relief to internally displaced persons (IDPs).” The CG on Tuesday called a meeting of several organizations working for the people of Pakistan to remind them of the grave situation in the Swat and Malakand region.

The CG urged Pakistani expatriates residing in the Kingdom to generously contribute to the PMs Fund.

The PNC in line with the CGs call, has decided “to hold a 15-day camp in the Kababish Restaurant beginning Friday,” wherein people have been urged to donate medicine, dry food, bed sheets, new clothes for children, etc. The government of Pakistan will make arrangements for custom clearance at Karachi and Islamabad and also the aids transportation to the camps of the IDPs.

The aggressive actions of the militants have forced at least three million people in the Swat Valley and other parts of the NWFP to migrate from their homes to elsewhere in Pakistan.

“These Pakistani brothers and sisters deserve our full attention and care,” the PNC chairman said. – With inputs from Ahmad Wahaj Siddiqui/SG
