RIYADH: The Eid Al-Adha holidays have increased by up to 50 percent the rental prices of tents used by people for camping in the desert.

“My shop is now completely empty of tents of all sizes. I have rented them all, although some of the 80 tents I have were not that good,” said Mukhtar, a Sudanese salesman.

He said the vacation is a good time for business. “Our business mainly depends on the holidays when most people go out,” he said.

According to Mukhtar, rent prices vary depending on the size of a tent. “A tent which is 4×6 meters with a single pole costs around SR100 a day. It used to be SR50,” he said, adding that a larger tent, 5×8 meters with two poles, used to cost SR100 and now costs SR200.

Mukhtar said he also rents out rugs, teapots, cushions, pillows, electric heaters and other equipment people might need while camping.

Muhammad Ghulam, a Pakistani working in a tent renting shop, said the holiday is a golden time to make money. “Some tents were reserved long before the holidays began,” he said, adding that the price increase is normal at this time of the year.

Safar Al-Otaibi, a university student, admitted that prices have gone up tremendously but added that this would not deter him from renting a tent to go camping with friends.

“My favorite spot for camping is Thimamah, which is 60 km to the north of Riyadh. Others prefer Rawdat Khiraim, which is 100 km to the east of the capital,” he said.

He said he also rents other essential items while camping for three days outside Riyadh. “We depend completely on ourselves when we go out, beginning with the slaughtering of a sheep for food and making tea and coffee,” said Al-Otaibi, adding that he and his friends have a great time out in the open.
