The foreign members included Abdul Rahman Swar Dahab, former Sudanese president, Abdussalam Al-Abadi, former secretary-general of the Jordanian Charitable Organization for Relief, Mohammed Yunus, founder of Grameen Bank in Bangladesh and Robert Crone, president of the Islamic Center in Washington.
The newly inducted members also comprised Jumua Al-Majed, a UAE businessman, Adel Al-Falah, undersecretary at the Kuwaiti Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, Humaid Ziyad, secretary-general of Yemen's Yateem Development Est., Makki Al-Husni, chairman of the Islamic Cultural Society of Morocco, Ahmed Haji, a Kenyan businessman, and Ala Mohammed Maher of Finland.
We have included these foreign dignitaries in the general assembly to make use of their expertise in relief and charitable activities, Basha said. He said the members discussed the annual report and other topics on the agenda openly.
We have gained a lot from their opinions and proposals to further improve IIROSAs activities. We are very happy for having these well-experienced personalities on the assembly.
Basha said IIROSA would start implementing its new strategic plan very soon. The plan aims at carrying out relief activities in a more professional manner, following international standards. The organization has been constructing environment-friendly residential and commercial towers in Makkah, Madinah and Jeddah to generate revenues for its relief activities.
He said IIROSA would hold an international conference in cooperation with UNICEF to discuss the impact of global financial crisis on the poor and relief operations. We are adopting every new aspect of life to strengthen IIROSA, he said.
In his presidential address, Al-Turki emphasized the importance given by Islam to charitable activities. He said IIROSA would intensify its contacts with Muslim and non-Muslim countries to expand its relief operations across the world. He thanked the Saudi government for its generous support to IIROSA, an affiliate of MWL.
Abdullah Omar Naseef, former deputy chairman of the Shoura Council and member of the assembly, expressed his happiness over progress achieved by IIROSA. If they implement what has been decided today, it would bring about positive and qualitative changes in IIROSA's activities, Naseef told Arab News. He said greater efforts were required in the relief sector.
